Manchester United & Me with... YesterdaysStars
Manchester United & Me with @YesterdaysStars
I speak all thing Manchester United with the man behind the @YesterdaysStars Twitter account. From earliest memory to what Manchester United means to him.
Who/what got you into Manchester United? And What was your earliest
memory of Manchester United?
Maybe the same answer to both questions. I can
remember watching the European Cup final in 1968 at my mates house. We were all
crowded round the TV. The glamour, the crowd, the noise, the silver cup and of
course George Best. Whenever we played football after that, I was always George
Best.
Best Manchester United game
you’ve been to?
A very hard question and if you asked me another day you may
get another answer. We have been blessed to see such highs.
It’s certainly not been all red roses though. Relegation, the
barren years of the late 70’s & 80’s where we had a couple of FA Cup’s. If I’m
put on the spot at the moment best game, honestly, I really don’t know.
1977 FA Cup final, 1991 European Cup Winners Cup Final have to be
up there. Then you have Barcelona at home in 1984 losing 2-0. They had Maradona
who was a really good player. For me Barcelona at home 1984.
Best moment you’ve had
following Manchester United?
Again, so many highs. But I think it has to be the
winning goal in the Champions League Final in 1999. The feeling of what United
had achieved. The joy and the celebrations after were superb! Manchester United
had won The Treble.
Any stand out stories
off the pitch following Manchester United?
Had so many good times following
United and have made some good friends along the way. We drove to Barcelona straight
from Wembley for the 1999 Champions League Final. Superb trip!
Another one that sticks out is United were drawn away to play in
Russia or somewhere like that. We were in the pub and some bright spark after a
few too many said lets go to Belfast and watch it. We visited George Best’s
grave too. Great trip.
We also went to Dudley on the 50th anniversary of
Duncan Edwards passing. We went to a very sombre service near his statue and
paid our respects, visited his grave and the church, very sad. The day finished
in a pub in Dudley with everyone singing United songs, a moving but a great day.
What’s been the worst
moment following Manchester United & why?
Probably losing to Liverpool in
the second to last game of the 91/92 league season. We thought we were going to
win the league after all those years. My eldest lad who was about 12 at the
time started crying. United means so much to us.
If you could go back
& be in attendance for 1 game in Manchester United history. What would it
be? Red Star Belgrade away, 5th Feb 1958 for the obvious reason.
When their playing in your town, You might just see @YesterdaysStars flag. |
All time favourite
player & cult hero?
Again a very hard one, 3 all time players stand out.
George Best, Stuart Pearson & Bryan Robson. All stand out for different
reasons. Lucky enough to have seen them all live.
Cult hero, Jim Holton & Les Sealey
Is Erik ten Hag the
right man to take Manchester United back to where they should be?
Any manager
of any club has to be given time and backing. The Premier League is a different
animal to any other league, It’s so much better. Erik must be given time and patience.
Allowed to do it his way. Small changes at the minute are ok. We seem to have a
bit of belief but not consistent enough yet.
And what does success look like this season?
Success is success. We
are Manchester United. Not getting drawn into anything else, there are 4
trophies up for grabs. One of them for me would be success. Success is about
winning trophies. Not finishing 2nd, 3rd or bloody 4th.
Nobody remembers them apart from the money people happy with the ££ it
generates.
Dinner party. You and 4
guests dead or alive connected to Manchester United and why?
Again another one
that could change day by day and depending on the mood.
Have to invite Sir Alex and Sir Matt just to talk nothing but
United since 1945.
Norman Whiteside, he’s such a football man, tells wonderful
stories and what a player he was too by the way.
Finally, would have to be George Best, the best United player I have
ever seen.
Best all time Manchester
United 11 you’ve seen play? (in a 4-4-2)
What makes Manchester
United so special to you?
It gets in your blood. It takes over your life. When
you have cried over United, tears of joy and sadness. When your kids and grandkids
have laughed and cried over United. You know what it means.
Really and truly. United are the team for me.
